Governor Katie Hobbs Visits Havasupai to Survey Flood Damage and Meet with Tribal Leaders
News Release
Phoenix, AZ – Today, Governor Katie Hobbs visited Havasupai to survey flood damage caused by heavy rain and thanked the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) who participated in last week’s rescue. She also met with Chairwoman Bernadine Jones and members of the Havasupai Tribal Council to discuss recovery efforts and offered continued support, issuing the following statement:
“I want to thank DEMA and all first responders, including members of the Havasupai Tribe, for their heroic effort to evacuate people and guide them to safety. Today, I surveyed the flood damage and the impact is devastating. My administration stands ready to support the Havasupai Tribe and ensure that those who have been displaced can return home as soon as possible.”
The visit comes one week after Governor Hobbs activated the State Emergency Operation Center and deployed aviation assets of the Arizona National Guard in response to the Havasupai Tribe’s request for assistance. DEMA’s swift response of the UH-60 Blackhawk led to the evacuation of 104 tribal members and tourists to safety, representing the largest rescue operation by the Arizona National Guard on record. The Guard crew also conducted three resupply missions to deliver critical supplies to help sustain the Tribe. DEMA conducted damage assessments and is helping coordinate outstanding needs for water, food, and supplies, which are being met through donations and mutual aid from adjacent tribes and federal partners.
