Dear Friends,

Tomorrow, as our nation comes together to celebrate the Fourth of July, Arizonans should keep a few thoughts in mind.

First, as we celebrate the patriots who fought for our independence centuries ago, it’s important to remember the thousands of Americans serving today in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world, and also to keep in mind their families. While we at home have the opportunity to celebrate the independence of our country in peace, we should all take a moment to thank those men and women who are defending us around the world.

Second, it’s important to celebrate Independence Day safely and responsibly. If you plan to visit Arizona’s forests over the holiday, remember that across the state, fire danger is very high. This should not stop anyone from enjoying our forests, but it does mean that all campers must exercise great caution – please observe regional restrictions, avoid starting flames, and, especially, do not set off fireworks.

Many of Arizona’s forests have increased fire restrictions to help prevent wildfires. If you plan on visiting one of our forests, please take a few minutes before you leave to check Arizona
2-1-1 Online at
www.az211.gov, where you can find the latest news on fire restrictions for your destination.

Also, as you celebrate, make sure that those around you avoid endangering others, and do not mix alcohol and driving. Check that any events you attend have a designated driver, and if you’re on one of Arizona’s lakes, remember that drinking while driving a boat is equally dangerous. Any amount of alcohol in a driver’s system, and not just an amount over the legal limit, poses a threat to others, so no matter the amount, make sure no one around you drinks and drives.

Independence Day is certainly a great day for celebration – and we can help make sure the Fourth is a great time for everybody by taking a few simple precautions to stay safe.

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact my office at 1-800-253-0883 and ask to speak to Constituent Services.

Yours very truly,

Janet Napolitano
Governor
