Dear Friends,
Many of you celebrated Mother’s Day this past Sunday by honoring the special women in your lives: mothers, grandmothers, wives, sisters, friends. With the many roles today’s women play – from caretakers and first responders to community and business leaders – we need to be particularly aware of issues related to our health and the health of our loved ones.
That's why Arizona joined the nation in celebrating the 8th Annual Women’s Health Week, which began Mother’s Day and continues through May 19. This week is a national effort to raise awareness about women's health and the importance of incorporating simple preventative and positive measures into everyday life.
Together with the Governor’s Commission on the Health Status of Women and Families in Arizona, we have worked hard over the last four years to make women’s health issues a priority. Through the Well Woman Health Check Program, we lead the effort to increase early detection of cancer with breast and cervical cancer screenings. We continue the fight for funding to offer life-saving exams to thousands of women. And we’re eliminating the waiting list for domestic violence shelters, so every victim has a safe place to go.
While Women’s Health Week focuses on issues that impact women, it also encompasses broader topics such as access to health care, affordability of prescription drugs, and steps we can all take to lead healthier lives.
This starts with our own bodies. There are 45 events scheduled in seven counties and three tribal communities across Arizona for Women’s Health Week to help women stay informed and improve their health.
By working together and taking an active role in promoting healthy living, we are on the road to a healthier Arizona.
