| AzTEP Objectives |
| |
Retention of New Teachers:
To address issues of high teacher turnover rates, first and second year AzTEP teachers will be required to participate in an induction program developed by the Arizona K-12 Center. This induction program is based upon research compiled by the Arizona K-12 Center that shows approximately one-third of new teachers leave the profession within the first two years. |

|
Retention of Existing Teachers:
The retention of existing teachers will be addressed through several required components: the Master Teacher Program is designed to recognize an individual for excellence in the classroom, including the ability to improve student achievement, mentor other teachers in achieving excellence and be able to communicate effectively with their community. Hand in hand with the Master Teacher Program is National Board Certification (www.nbpts.org) which is also a required element of the AzTEP grant. National Board Certification is an advanced teacher certification program for experienced teachers. Participants with join a pre-candidacy class and then participate in a cohort as they complete the certification process. Another required element of the grant is the Arizona Department of Education’s Professional Development Leadership Academy (PDLA). These series of workshops are designed to help school teams create their professional development plans. The Arizona Department of Education will also offer online professional development opportunities through Arizona School Services through Education Technology (ASSET) (www.asset.asu.edu). ASSET will provide a pathway of courses and online workshops for teachers at different levels of experience. |
| |
|
Recruitment of New Teachers:
An optional scholarship program is available through the Arizona Department of Education for those schools and/or districts that wish to use it for the purpose of recruiting teachers for their schools. |
| |
|
Improved Data Collection:
The fourth objective of AzTEP will center on improved data collection. Collected data will provide AzTEP schools, the Governor’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Education with information regarding the correlation between professional development activities, increases in the number of highly qualified teachers, and improved student achievement
